Chinese skaters displayed good form at the 2021 Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy, a test event for next year's Winter Olympics.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- If the 2021 Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy, a Beijing 2022 test event, is anything to go by to gauge the medal prospects of the Chinese skaters, the host nation has a reason to be optimistic.

Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, twice world champions and PyeongChang Winter Olympics silver medalists eased to victory in the pairs event on Friday evening.

Meanwhile, China's No. 1 men's skater Jin Boyang, a two-time world championships bronze medalist, overcame a lack of stamina following an appendicitis operation to win bronze in the men's singles event.

Zhao Hongbo, head coach of the Chinese figure skating team, was apparently satisfied with their performances.

"We have six pairs and four of them competed in the Asian Open. They all showed their normal shape in the competition," Zhao told Xinhua.

Zhao, who secured the Olympic pairs title with Shen Xue at Vancouver 2010, said that the Chinese team is now injury-free and everyone is making final touches ahead of the Winter Games.

"The music 'Bridge over Troubled Water' used for Sui and Han's free skating tonight was chosen by themselves because they said it narrates their own story," said Zhao.

Skating to Simon & Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," Sui and Han claimed the world championships pairs title for the first time in 2017.

Sui said that she felt so excited in the short program and a bit tight in the free skating, as the 2021 Asian Open was their first competition after quite a long time.

"Although we completed the routine without big mistakes, there were still some flaws," she said.

Sui's partner Han Cong was confident about their prospects at the Winter Olympics. "We will definitely raise the degree of difficulty in our routine before the Beijing Winter Olympics. We are confident of keeping in good shape in the Olympic competition," he said.

Jin Boyang told the media after the competition that he was recovering from an appendicitis operation.

"During my recovery, it was impossible to eat food as normal, which affected my performance a bit, the stamina in particular," the 24-year-old said.

"But fortunately, the bad thing has taken place. If it happens just before Beijing 2022, it would be a disaster," he added.

Jin stunned the world in the 2016 Boston Worlds where he won bronze, the best ever result for China in the men's singles event. In the 2017 Helsinki Worlds, Jin finished third again but qualified for the "300-point club."
