Hive Business brings together the UK's most ambitious dental businesses with the most qualified industry experts, and they have conducted a ground-breaking survey into the state of the UK's dental hygiene as part of National Smile Month. The results have left dental experts horrified.
Dental hygiene is incredibly important, not only to ensure we can show off our pearly whites, but because poor oral health has a direct negative impact on overall health, even being linked to serious health conditions like heart attacks and dementia.
With that in mind, it is safe to say that meeting the basic requirements needed to keep your teeth and gums healthy, like daily brushing, would be something we'd expect everyone to keep up with. However, the results of a new survey show that getting cavities from eating too many sweets may be the least of the UK's worries as a nation...
Hygiene Shocker: 39% of 25-34-year-olds brush their teeth less than once a week!
The recent survey on dental hygiene habits from Hive found that 39% of 25 to 34-year-olds brush their teeth less than once a week.
This disturbing discovery was also confirmed in many other recent studies, which suggest that dental hygiene often takes a back seat for people with underlying health concerns. Moreover, over 30% of people admit that they forget about brushing. It is pretty common for people to allow other health issues to take precedence over their dental health.
Mouthwash horror: 36% of 35-44-year olds reveal they have NEVER used mouthwash!
Studies show that 36% of 35-44-year-olds notice their breath when meeting others for the first
time. And that can be problematic since over a third of 35 to 44-year-olds have never used mouthwash.
Mouthwash is a vital part of any oral care routine and can help decrease cavities and strengthen the enamel.
Is sharing caring when it comes to oral hygiene? 28% of respondents reveal they've shared their toothbrush at least once.
Hive's survey on dental hygiene habits exposed some unusual habits, as 28% of respondents revealed that they share toothbrushes daily.
Leading health professionals have warned that this practice can lead to the spread of gum disease.
Hayley Robins, Accountancy Director from Hive, had this to say on the results:
"There are some shocking statistics found within the responses to this survey. With 39% of 25-35-year-olds brushing their teeth less than once a week, there is no wonder that there is such a high demand for dental services in the UK.
The research detailed within this blog is extremely insightful and should most certainly be made common knowledge to the population if dental hygiene and general health is going to be improved upon."
All is not lost: 63% of squeaky clean Millennials brush their teeth over three times a day!
The Millennials are considered the most 'woke' generation, and now they can add to their accolades for being 'squeaky clean.' Our dental hygiene survey showed that 63% of millennials brushed their teeth more than three times daily.
This is a significant win against bacteria, plaque, and other diseases. People who brush their teeth at least three times a day have a 12% lower risk of heart failure and a 10% lower risk of developing atrial fibrillation.
You need to see your dentist more. 33% of UK respondents reveal they aren't registered with a dental hygienist.
Does the high cost of living discourage people from prioritizing their dental hygiene?
Hive's survey revealed that a third of the population isn't even registered with a dental hygienist.
Hygienist treatments can cost Pound 20 to Pound 300, and sometimes more, depending on the length and complexity of the cosmetic procedures. This may be a discouraging factor for locals, as the
exorbitant costs give people fewer reasons to smile.
However, with the importance of oral hygiene and its link to overall wellbeing, seeing an oral hygienist needs to be a priority.
