Brand Story

The Brothers K are gradually building a distinct presence in Filipino genre fiction through stories that combine history, psychology, folklore, and personal experience across fantasy, dystopian fiction, and cosmic horror.
Behind the name are brothers Kyle, Kevin, and Keane, who began telling stories together as children in Cebu. Long before becoming published authors, they spent their early years making handmade comic books, recording improvised stories, and filling stapled pages with fictional worlds and characters - a tradition Keane carried forward in Grade 3, when his own handmade comics became popular among classmates for years.
'We were basically self-publishing before we knew what that meant,' the brothers said. 'Those homemade books became our first creative language, and we never really stopped speaking it.'
Their creative partnership has evolved naturally over the years, shaped by their different backgrounds and instincts. Kyle studied psychology and developed an interest in law and human behavior, influences that now shape the emotional and psychological depth of their characters. Kevin, who studied biology and became a licensed pilot, focuses on realism, historical detail, and immersive world-building. Keane, an artist of thirteen years with a background in sketching, painting, and graphic design, has contributed cover art for Shadow of the Basilisk, The Dreaming at the Drowned Town, and their upcoming novel Iron Monsoon - bringing the visual identity of their work to life from within the family.
Together, they create stories grounded not only in imagination, but also in lived experience and cultural identity.
The Brothers K draw heavily from Filipino and Bisaya influences, often incorporating history, folklore, grief, isolation, and moral complexity into their work. Rather than treating genre fiction purely as escapism, they approach storytelling as a means to explore difficult emotions and uncomfortable truths.
Their fantasy novel Answering the Human Question was partly shaped by personal loss following the death of a close friend. Their dystopian novel Shadow of the Basilisk reflects concerns surrounding artificial intelligence and the emotional impact of the pandemic generation's disrupted adolescence. Meanwhile, The Dreaming at the Drowned Town grew from recurring nightmares and dream journals, which later informed the book's emotional atmosphere.
'Great stories are not just about entertaining readers,' they said. 'They should make people feel something real.'
As Filipino genre fiction continues to grow, the brothers hope more local writers feel encouraged to tell stories rooted in their own experiences and perspectives without feeling limited by genre expectations.
'We want to be remembered simply as storytellers who took readers seriously,' they said. 'Stories do not need permission to belong anywhere.'
