Mark Carney, who took over as prime minister after Justin Trudeau stepped down earlier this year, has beaten the leader of the Conservative Party Pierre Poilievre, according to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation projections.

The election initially appeared to be a clear-cut race for the opposition Conservatives, who were enjoying a double-digit lead over the Liberals before Trudeau resigned.

Carney's rise was further fueled by widespread outrage over U.S. President Donald Trump's repeated threats to annex Canada and place stiff tariffs on the country.

Speaking after the election results came out, Carney said: "President Trump is trying to break us so that America can own us -- that will never, ever happen."

However, it is too soon to say whether the Liberals will form a majority government. The party has not yet secured the 172 electoral districts it needs for a majority.

As of 09:00 a.m. EDT (1300 GMT) on Tuesday, the Liberals had won or were leading in 168 out of 343 ridings. Poilievre's Conservatives are set to remain in opposition, with 144 ridings so far.

WHAT WILL HE FACE?

The ongoing trade tensions with the United States will require immediate attention. Despite some tariffs being paused, Canada still faces a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum, as well as tariffs on some Canadian-made cars and trucks. Trump also spoke up on the election day with another threat to Canada's sovereignty, arguing again that Canada could become a 51st U.S. state.

Another challenge Carney will face is the threat of a postal strike. Canada Post has been financially struggling for years, with a previous strike disrupting services last November. Its proposals to cut daily delivery or switch to community mailboxes have raised concerns. A lasting solution is needed to stabilize the postal service.

HOW WILL HE RESPOND?

Carney has made clear that addressing U.S. economic pressures will be his top priority. "The biggest risk we have to this economy is Donald Trump," he said during his English language debate.

One of his key promises is to protect Canadian industries from the impact of U.S. tariffs. Carney has specifically pledged to support industries in the coastal province Nova Scotia and other regions that are vulnerable to these tariffs, using Canadian resources and workers to build the nation's infrastructure and secure its future.

Carney also plans to introduce temporary measures to support retirees, including lowering the required withdrawals from Registered Retirement Income Funds, offering seniors some relief amid global market volatility.

During his campaign in Quebec last week, Carney argued that only he could protect the predominantly French-speaking province from Trump, describing the threat as "existential."

"President Trump is threatening the distinct identity of Quebecers," he said, vowing that a strong government would defend Quebec, protect Canadian sovereignty, and stand up to Trump.
