Cairo [Egypt], June 4 (ANI): Congress MP Anand Sharma, who is part of the all-party delegation led by NCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule completed their four-nation visit on Wednesday. He issued strong remarks against Pakistan and said that friendly nations extended support to India's position on terrorism and assured backing for a pending UN proposal on a global convention against terrorism.
While speaking to ANI in Cairo, Sharma said, 'We are encouraged by the fact that friendly nations have understood India's position. They condemned the terror attack on India.'
He confirmed that discussions were held on India's long-pending proposal at the United Nations for a comprehensive international convention against terrorism.
'We also talked about our pending proposal in the UN regarding the comprehensive international convention against terrorism, and we received assurances of support in this regard as well,' he added.
The Congress leader also criticised Pakistan's international outreach, calling it a 'copycat move' in response to India's diplomatic efforts. 'What will they say? They first need to clarify. They should look after their people. They take money from the IMF, and that money is misused by the military; it is used for spreading terrorism... Pakistan must understand that it cannot blackmail; it must look into itself first,' Sharma told ANI.
He also commented on global trade tensions and the changing attitude of major economic powers. 'The countries which were the great champions of free trade are seeking to undermine the WTO. However, a rule-based multilateral trade regime is something that the world would continue to need, given the imbalance and disparities, and a one-size-fits-all solution is not workable. But all countries are also engaged in trade negotiations or tariff negotiations with the United States of America after the big disruption of the shocking shocks that are being delivered region-wise. But there is no need to panic...' he explained.
While discussing India-Pakistan relations, Sharma reminded that three Indian Prime Ministers had extended diplomatic outreach to Pakistan, only to face betrayal. 'Our three Prime Ministers have talked to their (Pakistan) Prime Ministers and Presidents; Atal Bihar Vajpayee went to Lahore, spoke to Nawaz Sharif, and soon after that, Kargil happened. Then, parliament was attacked. After the Agra meeting, similar things happened, then the Mumbai attack occurred, in which Indian citizens, along with some foreign nationals, were killed... all these things show their intention...' he said, highlighting Pakistan's history of backstabbing India's peace efforts.
Earlier, Congress MP Anand Sharma on Saturday said that India gave a 'befitting reply' in response to the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
Interacting with the Indian community in Addis Ababa, Anand Sharma emphasised that India does not believe in violence and war and highlighted that only the terrorist organisations were targeted in the precise Indian strikes under Operation Sindoor.
'It is an ancient culture of centuries that we do not attack any country, but we gave the attackers a befitting reply. Our army fought back strongly this time too; they targeted only the terrorist organisations.'
'India's thinking is clear that India is not a country that believes in violence and war. It is an ancient culture of centuries that we do not attack any country, but we gave the attackers a befitting reply. Our army fought back strongly this time too; they targeted only the terrorist organisations,' Anand Sharma said.
He cornered Pakistan of protecting terrorists while referring to the 26/11 Mumbai terrorist attack.
'When the Mumbai attack or the Parliament attack occurred, the whole world was stunned. But our agencies did the right thing. India did not sleep; it took time to identify the culprits. Cases were filed in America as well, but in Pakistan, cases were not filed contrary to what they had assured the world, the United Nations. Because these attacks were carried out at their behest with their help,' he said. (ANI)
