WASHINGTON, May 6 (Xinhua) -- Republicans in the United States have proposed allocating 1 billion U.S. dollars in taxpayer funding for security enhancements tied to President Donald Trump's White House ballroom project -- despite earlier assurances it would rely entirely on private money.
When unveiling the plan last year, Trump described the ballroom as a "gift" funded by private donors, saying "not one penny" of federal funds would be used.
The project was pitched as a cost-free upgrade to the White House, replacing the East Wing and creating a permanent venue for large events.
Now, a Republican-led bill includes 1 billion dollars earmarked for security upgrades connected to the ballroom and the broader White House complex.
The funding would support Secret Service enhancements, including expanded perimeter defenses and additional security infrastructure.
Supporters say the spending is necessary, especially after recent security threats, including a shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Critics argue it undercuts the original promise, shifting substantial costs onto taxpayers.
